Wedding season hair has a specific problem that everyday hair doesn't. It's not just about looking good walking in. It has to hold through a ceremony, a cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing, usually outdoors, sometimes in heat or humidity. That's where a lot of "special occasion" updos actually fail.
I don't reach for anything complicated for weddings. I reach for a few reliable shapes and a pin that won't move.
The low chignon. Twist the hair at the nape, tuck the ends under, and secure with a French hair pin crossed through the base at an angle. This is the updo I use most for weddings because it photographs cleanly from every angle and doesn't loosen with movement the way a high bun can.
The half-up twist. Take the crown section back, twist it once, and pin it flat against the back of the head. This keeps hair off the face for the ceremony without the commitment of a full updo, and it works well with down hair for the reception if you decide to let it out later in the night.
The soft side-swept pin. Sweep hair to one side, twist loosely, and place a single pin low near the ear. This one leans more romantic and works especially well with waves or texture already in the hair.
All three of these hold up through movement because the pin is doing structural work, not just decorative work. A French hair pin, placed correctly, grips through tension rather than clamping from outside, which means no slipping as the night goes on and no visible hardware fighting with the updo.
