How to Make a Bun Stay All Day Without a Claw Clip

Posted by Aviva Jansen Perea on

The mistake most people make with a claw clip bun is trusting one point of contact to hold an entire day. The clip clamps the base, and the second your hair loosens even slightly from movement, humidity, or just gravity, that single clamp point is all that's standing between you and a bun that's sliding down the back of your head by mid-afternoon.

A bun hair pin works on a completely different principle. Instead of clamping, it anchors through the twisted base of the bun itself, which means the hold moves with your hair instead of fighting it.

Here's my process for a bun that actually lasts:

  1. Gather and twist, don't just wrap. Twisting the hair before you coil it into a bun gives the pin something to grip. A bun that's just wrapped and left loose has nothing for a pin to anchor into.
  2. Place the first pin low, not high. This is the most common error. People place the pin near the top of the bun where it's visible, but the base is where the actual tension lives. Slide the pin through the base of the twist, close to the scalp.
  3. Cross a second pin in the opposite direction. One pin holds. Two pins, crossed, hold and stay put. This is the difference between a bun that survives a full workday and one that needs to be redone by lunch.
  4. Check the angle. The pin should go in at a slight downward angle and then flip flat. If it's inserted straight in, it has less to grip and will work its way out.
  5. Skip the extra product. If your bun is still slipping after this, it's placement, not the amount of hairspray or texture spray you're using.

For thicker or longer hair, the Power Pin is built for exactly this, full buns that need real hold. For finer hair or a smaller bun, the Petite Power Pin does the same job without adding bulk to a smaller style.
